Ngorongoro Conservation Area & Attractions
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area in northern Tanzania, is a geological marvel, haven of biodiversity and popular tourist attraction.
The Ngorongoro Crater, found within the larger conservation area, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its incredible population of mammals, including the most dense population of lions in the world. It is also the largest intact volcanic caldera on earth. It is sometimes referred to as Africa’s “Garden of Eden” and “Eighth Wonder of the World.
Also within the conservation area are Empakaai and Olmoti Craters, both offering adventurous treks and stunning views. All treks are accompanied by an armed ranger for safety. Another popular area is Olduvai Gorge, the excavation site known as “The Cradle of Mankind.” It is famous for the important fossils and remains of human first tools that have been found here. It continues to be excavated and the museum is open year-round for archaeological enthusiasts.
The Best Time to Visit Ngorongoro Crater is any time! The appeal of Ngorongoro is that many of the animals live here year-round, especially the lions and elephants. So you can experience the thrill of an amazing game drive in dry or wet seasons. The wet season brings lush greenery and replenishes the crater lakes, while the dry season means a better chance of spotting the shy rhino and herds of elephants.
