Mikumi National Park is a small but mighty national park in Tanzania’s Southern Circuit route. While it is lesser known, it is just a few hour’s drive from bustling Dar es Salaam. This 75,000 square kilometre (47,000 square miles) tract of wilderness stretches almost as far as the Indian Ocean and offers visitors a more exclusive experience, since the park sees fewer visitors than neighboring Nyerere National Park. The open horizons and abundant wildlife of the Mkata Floodplain are popular areas to visit.
The park is known for its large herds of elephants, as well as lions, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, wildebeests, and various antelope species. Additionally, Mikumi is home to over 400 species of birds, making it a significant destination for bird watchers.

The Best Time To Visit Mikumi National Park is during the dry season, from June to October. During this period, animals are more concentrated around water sources, making wildlife viewing easier and more predictable. The dry season also offers pleasant weather with lower humidity. The wet season, from November to May, brings lush greenery and abundant birdlife, but access to some areas may be restricted due to heavy rains and muddy roads.
