This park is very remote and can only be accessed by boat. Guests may spend a day in nearby Kigoma, a city along the shore of Lake Tanganyika, before venturing to the park by water taxi. This experience allows guests to explore more of Western Tanzania.

The Best Time to Visit Mahale Mountains National Park is during the dry season, from June to October. During this period, the trails are more accessible, and chimpanzees are easier to track as they move closer to the shorelines. The dry season also offers pleasant weather conditions for hiking and lake activities. The wet season, from November to May, brings lush vegetation and an abundance of birdlife. However, the trails can become slippery and challenging, and chimpanzees may move deeper into the forest.
