What is the culture of Zanzibar?
Zanzibar culture is different from mainland Tanzanian culture. While there are distinct tribal cultures throughout mainland Tanzania, Zanzibari culture is a beautiful blend of ancient influences. These are evident in the unique Zanzibari foods, music, dress and styles of art found throughout the island.
There is a distinct religious influence from Islam, as well, which plays a significant part in daily life and dress. For example, you will likely hear the “call to prayer” during your stay in Stone Town, and pass beautiful mosques as you walk through town.
Although international visitors are not expected to uphold Muslim beliefs, we suggest that visitors to Zanzibar be respectful of the conservative culture, especially in Stone Town.
Some of these include:
- dressing modestly. Men, please wear a shirt at all times. Ladies, please no short dresses or shorts. Please wear a cover-up over your bikini or swim-suit when you are not swimming.
- asking before taking photos of people or buildings, especially of mosques or people at prayer.
- remember that Fridays are days of worship, while Saturdays and Sundays are business as usual.
- displays of affection such as lengthy kisses or sensual caresses should be reserved for the privacy of your hotel room. Hand-holding and discreet hugs are fine.
- alcohol should be consumed at your hotel or dining room. Do not carry bottles on the street.
Of course, these standards are lax during festivals such as Sauti za Busara and the Zanzibar International Film Festival. Also, standards of dress and modesty are relaxed at hotels and resorts across the island.
