Virunga National Park, located in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, is Africa’s oldest national park, established in 1925. Covering approximately 7,800 square kilometers, the park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its exceptional biodiversity and stunning landscapes, which include savannas, swamps, lava plains, and the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains.
Virunga is home to one of the world’s last remaining populations of mountain gorillas, along with other wildlife such as chimpanzees, elephants, lions, and over 700 bird species. The park is part of the greater Virunga Conservation Area, which also includes Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda.

Best Time To Visit Virunga Mountain
The Best Time to Visit Virunga National Park is during the dry seasons, which are from June to September and December to February. These periods offer the best conditions for gorilla trekking, volcano climbing, and other outdoor activities, as the trails are less muddy and more accessible. The dry seasons also provide clearer skies and better visibility for wildlife spotting and photography. However, the park is open year-round, and the rainy seasons (March to May and October to November) bring lush, green landscapes and fewer tourists, which some visitors might find appealing.
