The Usambara Mountains are part of the larger Eastern Arc Mountains that extend from Southern Kenya into Tanzania. These ancient mountains are estimated to be around 2 million years old. The mountain range is home to important ‘Old Growth Cloud Rain Forests’ and the nature reserves are home to numerous endemic plants which play a distinct role in the vast biodiversity of the area. The forests are also famous for a large population of chameleons, of which you are likely to spot during a forest hike.

Treks in the area include short hikes to beautiful natural waterfalls or full-day treks to destinations such as Irente or Mambo View Points (alternatively, these points are accessible from comfortable lodges, if you don’t feel up to a long forest hike). The highest point of the Usambaras is Chambolo Peak (2,289 m), the full trek to this point usually taking 4-5 days and passes through cloud rain forests as well as local, remote villages at high altitudes.

The largest town in the area is Loshoto, within Tanga District and is approximately 6 hrs drive from Arusha/Moshi. Visitors will pass the rugged and stunning Mkomazi National Park on the way, so it is a good idea to pair a safari game drive with a multi-day trek in the Usambaras.
