Planning a visit to Ngorongoro Conservation Area? If you want to explore this incredible destination beyond the famous Ngorongoro Crater, then consider a day hike at Empakaai Crater.
The 5 km hike takes approximately 2 hours, and allows guests the chance to experience more of the larger conservation area. The trek has an incline of approximately 300 meters, and is appropriate for most fitness levels, so long as participants can walk for an hour at a leisurely pace.
All hikes are accompanied by an armed ranger, as there are wild animals known to pass through the area. So far on our day hikes, guests have spotted baboons, gazelles, dikdiks and a far-off buffalo, and of course – flamingos. The crater floor is covered in a soda lake that is home to resident pink flamingos, who prefer the alkaline waters.

Day Hike Empakaai - Morning
We recommend a morning hike for the best chance at spotting a dikdik or gazelle alongside the trail.
Ascend during the cool of the morning and photograph flamingos along the soda lake that covers the crater floor.
As the day warms, trek back up the steep incline, in the shade of the Ngorongoro Highlands natural forest.
The entire trek takes 2 – 2.5 hrs, meaning plenty of time to visit a Maasai Boma within the Conservation area, or continue driving into Serengeti National Park as part of a personalized itinerary.
Day Hike Empakaai - Afternoon
The afternoon hike is ideal to combine with an Ngorongoro Crater drive, so long as guests are fit and able to endure warm afternoon temperatures under the strong sun.
Game drives are exciting, but are often confined to the jeep, this is an exceptional way to experience nature, see flamingos up close, and get in some exercise, too.
