4 Days Mount Meru Climbing Overview
Mt Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest peak, overlooking Arusha National Park and Arusha town. Climbers who don’t have enough days to attempt Mount Kilimanjaro, or who want a different type of challenge may consider trekking this dormant volcano. At 14,980 ft (4565 m), summiting Mount Meru is an impressive feat in itself.
Accommodation on Mt Meru is in structured huts with covered dining areas and private toilets. There is no camping option permitted by the Tanzania Parks authorities.
4 Days Mount Meru Climbing Itinerary
Day 1: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut
Elevation: 4921 ft (1500 m) to 8250 ft (2541 m)
Distance: 9 miles / 14 km
Approx: 4-6 hours
Hike Through: Mountain Forest to Heather-moorland
The trek begins within Arusha National Park and passes through the impressive Fig Tree Arch. Expect wildlife sightings this day, including colobus monkeys, spectacular bird sightings like turaco or sunbirds. There is a rare (but still possible) chance of seeing a leopard or coming close to Cape Buffalo, so all climbs must be accompanied by an armed ranger as a precaution.
Overnight at Miriakamba Hut
Day 2: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut
Elevation: 8250 ft (2541 m) to 11,712 ft (3570 m)
Distance: 4 miles / 6 km
Approx: 3-5 hours
Hike Through: Heather-moorland to Alpine Desert
Acclimatization hike to Little Meru Point, approximately 1 hr
After breakfast, climb to Saddle Hut through heatherzones and see the surrounding vegetation become more shrubs and heather as you climb in altitude. You are likely to continue to spot vibrant birdlife, and perhaps some wildlife like gazelles or bushbucks in the distance. You’ll enjoy a hot lunch at Saddle Hut, and then are strongly encouraged to rest, as the summit will begin around midnight.
Day 3: SUMMIT DAY
Day 4: Miriakama Hut to Momella Gate
Elevation: 8,259 ft (2514 m) to 4,921 ft (1,500 m)
Distance: 4 miles / 7 km
Approx: 3-4 hours
Hike Through: Heather-moorland and Mountain forest
This is the final day of trekking. Climbers continue descending from Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate. Upon descending to the base of the mountain, trekking groups can take a short ‘walking safari’ along the marshy areas where buffalo and giraffe are known to graze, or to the refreshing Tululusia waterfall for a picnic lunch. This light trekking day is a favorite of most, as there is a chance to combine wildlife viewing as part of their final day on the mountain.
Upon reaching the gate, trekkers will be awarded certificates, and your team will be met by a guide and transported to your accommodation in either Moshi or Arusha.
Congratulations! You did it!
