15 Days Family Northern Tanzania Safari

The adventure of a lifetime – shared with your family.
Learn first-hand about one of Tanzania’s tribal cultures by spending time with the Maasai. Experience Africa’s wildlife through walking safaris and game drives.
Spot the Big Five most dangerous animals in Africa and enjoy the wonders of Tanzania’s nature.

This tour is ideal for families with children who want to explore nature and make lasting memories.

Pick up upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport. You will be met by your guide and driven to one of our partner lodges in the foothills of Mount Meru. Enjoy the pool, the garden or take a nature walk before dinner.

Meal Plan: Bed & Breakfast

After breakfast, depart to the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro (approx 1.5 hrs drive). Learn about the traditions of the local Chagga tribe, including a traditional lunch. Then, enjoy a coffee tour, and of course, enjoy freshly roasted coffee at the end.
There is also an option for a short hike to stunning waterfalls (treks are typically suited for children ages 6 and up, or babies and toddlers in back carriers).

Overnight at a lodge in the Arusha area. Full board.

Option to add family cycling in the area – contact in advance to arrange.

After breakfast, depart for Tarangire National Park (approx 2.5 hrs drive).
Tarangire is known as the Home of Elephants. Your family is sure to spot herds of elephants – including some adorable babies!
You’ll also enjoy spying impalas, zebras and funny warthogs during your game drive.

Stay at a tented camp for a sense of nature. Enjoy the swimming pool in the late afternoon and the campfire after dinner. Full board.

Option to add bush breakfasts, guided walking safaris, and night drive. (Special permits may be required. Contact in advance to arrange).

After breakfast, drive through Tarangire Park toward Karatu, enjoying a partial game drive en-route.

A highlight of your trip to Africa is the chance to learn about other cultures, broadening your understanding of the human experience. A visit to a local Maasai village and school this afternoon will leave a lasting impact on your children for the rest of their lives.

Activities may include Maasai dancing, watching warriors make a fire and roast a goat, beading, and cattle-herding with Maasai children (time-permitting).

We encourage families to write letters (including pictures and photos) to share with children in the local area before visiting. When you arrive for your safari, your children can meet their ‘pen pal’ in person for a more personal touch. They may continue this correspondence long after you safari ends, ask us how.

Overnight at a lodge in the Karatu area. Full board.

Early morning departure to the famous Ngorongoro Crater: a wonder of nature as the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera. The large concentration of animals means a likelihood of seeing zebras, lions, hyenas, elands and even the endangered Black Rhino.

Picnic lunch within the crater, overlooking a natural pool for hippos.
Overnight in Karatu-area lodge nestled in the coffee-growing highlands, with a pool and nature walks. Full board.

Option to add hike to waterfalls, Empakai Crater or visit Lake Magadi (soda lake).

The Serengeti may be the most famous of all national parks. It is a very large park, with forests, grasslands and rivers. It is here that herds of wildebeests, antelope and gazelles track the great plains in search of the best grazing land. You have the best chance of spotting all of the Big Five animals of Africa here in the Serengeti.

Your game drives will include a picnic lunch, with an option to return to your accommodations at the time of choosing, if you want a chance to swim or enjoy additional activities at the lodge.
Full Board.

Drive to the northern Serengeti to view the Great Migration. Exciting river crossings to keep your family enthralled (June – October). Stay in an incredible tented lodge, with a chance to explore, enjoy the stars at night or watch wildlife from a safe distance.

Tented lodges offer an environmentally-friendly approach to staying in a national park, while still offering comfort and amenities you would expect from a top lodge. Most of our partner lodges offer swimming pools, spa services and evening entertainment such as cultural dances and traditional music. Book early to secure the best accommodations for your safari in the Serengeti.

Full Board.

Depart after breakfast depart Serengeti heading toward Lake Natron. Youw I’ll enjoy a game drive as your head out of Serengeti.
Arrive at Lake Natron for sunset, flamingo viewing and visit a group of giraffes at a grove of acacia trees.

Option to visit local villages and spend time with the Maasai, for cultural experience that may include beading, dancing and animal care.

Option to visit the historical site of Hominid Footprints near the lakefront.

Overnight at a local lodge. Full Board.

After an early breakfast, hike to nearby waterfalls (recommended for children age 6 and up), which requires hiking through shallow (ankle-deep, usually) water, and swimming at a calm pool beneath the falls. Enjoy picnic lunch at the falls. Then, drive back to Arusha (5 hrs drive).

Overnight at Arusha-area hotel. Full Board.

Final day of the family safari tour. After breakfast, you will arrange with your driver the ideal time to transfer to the airport.

Half-board included.

There is also an option to add a Zanzibar extension for a beach experience at the Indian Ocean. Kite surfing, swimming with sea turtles and boat tours are some family favorites.

Our Travellers Reviews

Outstanding tour operator

I can't say enough good things about Bryson and Petit Maasai. Bryson handled our last-minute trip to Tanzania like he'd been working on it for months instead of a handful of days after we connected about a week before our family arrived.

Kilimanjaro With Petit Maasai safaris- 5 stars!!!

We book 7 days Kilimanjaro with Petit Maasai safaris after having the safari with another company and we made it with a brilliant guide to the summit. We took the Lemosho route, starting in the rain forest and approached the camp via various tents campsites.

A great experience!

We did a safari in the northern parks of Tanzania with Petit Maasai Safaris and it was a great experience! The guide and the cook were really professional and nice with us, trying to make us feel comfortable and to satisfy our requests. Thanks a lot!
